Careers as a psychometrician

Studying Psychology at Cambridge

To become a psychometrician you first need to obtain a degree in a relevant discipline. This is usually psychology or another social science, but can be management, education or statistics.  By far the largest number of professional psychometricians begin with a first degree in psychology, and the University of Cambridge offers two, both recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as providing Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR) as a professional psychologist. For more details see: Studying Psychology as an Undergraduate at Cambridge

The Psychometrics Centre also provides a number of Masters level courses, seminars and training days in psychometrics at Cambridge suitable for those on other Masters courses within which psychometrics, questionnaire design and the necessary statistical methods are an important element, for example the MPhil in Social and Developmental Psychology and various taught courses within the Medical School.

Many psychometricians begin their careers at Doctoral level, and while most are graduates in psychology, others come from backgrounds in education, statistics, mathematics, IT and business studies. Our PhD programme operates across several faculties and departments of the University, including Social and Developmental Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Psychiatry, and Social and Political Sciences.

If you are interested in following a PhD on a psychometric topic, why not send us you resume or CV? We will be able to advise you. Bursaries and scholarships are also available although they are very competitive. Contact us or call us on +44 (0) 1223 769485 for more details.
